Let the Juicing Begin

The juicing has begun!  In contrast to the ease with which we decided on Rishi Tea for our supplier and focused in on which varietals and botanicals to feature on our menu, the road to our first juice had many twists and turns.  After much online research and many trips to juice bars in Seattle, New Hampshire, and everywhere in between, we zeroed in ...Read more

From the Dark into the Light

The Winter Solstice is unique among days of the year — the day on the calendar that marks the longest night and the shortest day.  The dark triumphs, but only briefly.   For the Winter Solstice is a turning point.   The nights grow shorter and the days grow longer, the dark wanes and the light waxes in power.   From the dark womb of the night, the light is born. Long ago, people in the northern hemisphere celebrated the winter solstice, when the days grew short and the sun was at its lowest point in the sky.   Many people had good reason to ...

The quiet REVOLUTION

There is a quiet REVOLUTION going on right now.  Not the ones in Libya or Egypt, although they are connected to this revolution in some regard.  There are many locations that could be mistaken for the revolution for which I speak. This revolution is not bound by geography.  In fact, what most revolutions have in common is a dispute over boundaries – geographical, philosophical, religious, political.  One concept over another.  This team over that one ad nauseam, ad infinitum.  This revolution defies space and it’s time is now.  You may be part of this quiet REVOLUTION and not even know ...

Opening to the Springtime Magic

Here in Western North Carolina, Spring is working its magic.  The trees are budding and the daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths are blooming into a rainbow of colors.  Asheville is beginning to buzz with activity again, to wake up from the hibernation of Winter.  On one of our recent days of 70 degree weather, I made a joke to a local about skipping Spring and going straight into Summer.  He just shook his head and told me not to be fooled, another snowfall could be right around the corner.  Being new to this part of the world, I do not yet ...

It’s the Little Things

Have you ever had one of those moments where someone says something that fundamentally shifts the way you were thinking?  Recently my wife Jenny reminded me of a truth.  I was telling her that I was sad not to be giving her the lavish presents this Valentine’s Day that I feel she deserves.  Without a beat, she reminded me of a few little things I had given her in the recent past and how much those had meant to her.  It wasn’t the ‘bigness’ or cost of the gifts that made them special, but merely my act of being thoughtful ...

New Year’s Revelation

As 2010 comes to a close, it is natural and even encouraged to reflect upon the previous year in anticipation of what is to come in the New Year.  This is so engrained in our culture that we have developed a ritual, New Year’s Resolutions, that can be a very successful way of feeling things like “I’m never going to change!” or “Why is making change so hard?!?”  Statistics show that by June, only 46% of people who made resolutions are keeping them. Ultimately, by December 31st, 97% of the people who made resolutions are back to the ...

Flight of the Hummingbird and Opening of Nourish & Flourish

There is that point in every epic story of victory where the hero or heroine is at their wit’s end.  The place where it seems as though they might pack it up and turn around.  Where the odds seem stacked against all possibility.  As the viewer or listener, these stories recall for us our own experiences of victories and defeats great and small.  Much of the time, it's somewhere in between.  We are drawn to these stories time and time again, listening with new ears, seeing with new eyes the various plots and characters playing out ...

It’s so RAD (pt.3)

It makes sense to me that the unexpectedly slow pace of finding the space for Nourish & Flourish would transform into an equally unexpected warp speed of building out the space to fit our vision.  Yes, it makes sense, but it's not necessarily comfortable.  The transition from dreaming and talking in theory about what we desire into making the daily decisions that shape the look and feel of the space felt like going from a friendly game of cards at home to a high stakes poker table in Vegas.  It's essentially the same thing, but wow -- does it ever ...

It’s so RAD! (pt. 2)

At the end of last week's blog post, we had dinner with friends and a lively conversation that shifted our focus in the search for the home of Nourish & Flourish from downtown Asheville to...  the River Arts District!  The very next day we drove down Clingman Avenue and up Depot Street with new eyes to the possibilities.  We were aware of new energy coming into this neighborhood since we met our realtor here three months ago when he showed us space in the new Glen Rock Depot project, aspiring to be one of ...
